Dobby weaving dates to the mid-1800s, when a "dobby" attachment on the loom allowed weavers to manipulate yarns during the weave to create a thicker, heavily textured three-dimensional surface. Because that surface exposes more edges than a standard twill or plain weave, the indigo rope-dyed warp fades with a high-contrast electric blue that highlights the intricate geometric texture beneath. The black sulphur-dyed weft holds its color throughout, keeping the contrast sharp as the fade develops.
